Driving Dangerously in Fog Can Lead to Claims On Your Virginia Insurance Policy!
We’re often warned about how rain, ice and snow are driving hazards, but fog can be just as dangerous. Driving in thick fog has led to numerous accidents in Virginia, causing injuries and death. The massive pile-up at Fancy Gap on the I-77 in November 2010, which caused two deaths and 16 injuries, is a case in point. Car accidents of course may also lead to higher Virginia insurance premiums.
Unlike rain or snow, fog doesn’t affect the condition of the road, but severely reduces visibility, so that you can only see a few meters ahead of you. Ideally, it’s best to pull over at a safe spot if the fog gets particularly dense, but if you have to drive, reduce your speed. Keep an eye on your speedometer. Fog can create the illusion that you’re going slower than you really are.
Make sure your headlights are on, even if it’s not night time, but don’t use your high beams – they will only make visibility worse. Because fog reduces vision, it might be wise to open your window a little to help you hear traffic.
Try to avoid pulling over on the shoulder of the road if you choose to stop driving. Motorists will often use the car in front of them as a guide when driving in fog, so if you pull over on the side of a highway where there is little room, cars behind you could follow you and rear-end you. Wait until you exit the freeway before you pull over.
Remember to drive defensively in foggy conditions. Also ensure your Virginia insurance car coverage is adequate and up to date.
